November 2014: IDOP Around Mexico

This year we made a greater effort from our social network sites to promote IDOP: the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. We had saw a reach extended to various nations in Latina America from Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and around Mexico, including in the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, and Sonora to name a few. We are finding more and more Latinos are interested in Extreme Missions and the persecution in restricted or hostile areas. Many are paying close attention to reports about atrocities perpetrated against our Christian brethren, and the constant attacks against Christians in Nigeria, Pakistan, Siria and Irak in particular… and they want to know if what they are hearing is true or exaggerated… and how to respond. • Concern and discernment on part of Latin American churches for their brethren who suffer for the sause of Christ.
  • Prayer and physical support for those brethren through organizations like VOM and missions.
  • For strenghth and grace of Spirit for those who personally experiment persecution for sharing and exercising their faith, to maintain their confidence and hope no matter what the cost, and in so doing win those to Christ who would persecute them.

VOM USA / VOMC: EGYPT: Christian Mother Kidnapped by Militant Muslim

EGYPT: Christian Mother Kidnapped by Militant Muslim

Source: VOM USA

Christian girls like these are often at risk of
being kidnapped because of their faith.

Eman Morco Saroufim, a 39-year-old Christian mother of five children, was kidnapped from her village in Menia on September 3rd by an armed Muslim man.

Officials initially denied that Eman had been kidnapped, reporting that she had willingly left her family and converted to Islam. Thankfully, Eman was able to escape her captor on September 26th and has since publicly stated that she is a Christian and will never convert to Islam. However, she and her children remain under threat, as her abductor has threatened to kidnap her children if she does not return to him.

Sadly, this assault on Eman and her family is hardly an isolated case. Christian women and girls are often the targets of kidnapping and forced conversion to Islam. (For more information on such attacks, please visit this page.)

While thanking the Lord for providing a way for Eman to escape her kidnapper, let us pray that our gracious God will continue to protect this victimized mother and her five children. May He heal Eman from any physical or emotional wounds resulting from her abduction and captivity. Please also pray that the officials involved in this case will pursue justice for our dear sister in Christ, working to ensure that the perpetrator is fairly punished for his crime. Additionally, pray that Eman’s kidnapper will repent of his misdeeds and ultimately come to a saving faith through Jesus Christ. Mindful that there are many other girls and women in Egypt who have been the targets of similar assaults, let us ask the Lord to supernaturally sustain them and somehow enable them to return safely to their homes and families.

To post a prayer of love and concern for Eman and her family, visit our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall.

Blast from the Past VOM Mexico: Los LLanos Group Living in Exile Still

SEEN HERE ARE THE MAJORITY OF INDIGENA EVANGELICAL BELIEVERS WHO WERE EXPELLED FROM THEIR COMMUNITIES OF LOS LLANOS AND SAN GREGORIO IN CHIAPAS, MEXICO AFTER THEY WERE ATTACKED BY NEIGHBORS , THEIR HOUSES DESTROYED, WATER AND LIGHTS CUT, AND DISPOSSESSED OF ALL THEIR BELONGINGS, LAND, ANIMALS, AND CROPS.

AUTHORITIES IN LOS LLANOS ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF SAN CRISTOBAL, AND SAN GREGORIO IN HUIXTAN WHO OPENLY ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR AFILIATION WITH THE ZAPATISTA MOVEMENT AND THEIR POLITICAL WING, LA OTRA CAMPAÑA, BELIEVE THAT THEIR INDIGENOUS CUSTOMS TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER THE MEXICAN CONSTITUTION, AND THAT ALL THEIR INHABITANTS MUST NOT ONLY SUPPORT THE MORE THAN A DOZEN TRADITIONAL RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS BUT ALSO PARTICIPATE IN THE PAGAN RITUALS COMBINED WITH CATHOLIC RITES, THE ALCOHOLIC DRINKING AND IN GIVING OFFERINGS TO THEIR GODS AND SAINTS, AND IN PAYING A CUOTA FOR EACH MALE 14 YEARS OLD AND UP.

THIS IS A HARDSHIP FOR EVANGELICALS WHO ARE NO LONGER PRACTICERS OF THE MAJORITY FAITH, AND WANT TO EXERCISE AND LIVE THEIR OWN.

THE GOVERNMENT ON ALL LEVELS HAS FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE EXISTS, MUCH LESS RESPOND TO THE LEGITIMATE COMPLAINTS OF BELIEVERS THREATENED, DENIED LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL BENEFITS, WHO HAVE THEIR CHILDREN DENIED A PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION, LOSE THE TENANCY OF THEIR LANDS , THE BENEFIT OF THE CROPS THEY SOWED, THEIR CATTLE OR SHEEP, HOUSES, HAVE THEIR CHURCHES TORN DOWN OR BURNED,  OR ARE FACING EXPULSION… AND EVEN DEATH, AS HAD 4 CHRISTIANS  WHO WERE  EXECUTED IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS.

EVEN AFTER FORMAL COMPLAINTS ARE MADE TO THE NATIONAL COMMISSION OF HUMAN RIGHTS, THE GOVERNMENT HAS NOT RESPONDED, AND DOES ALL POSSIBLE TO AVOID HAVING TO COMPLY WITH THE NCHR RECOMMEDATIONS… TAKING AS LONG AS MINIMALLY 18 MONTHS AND MORE, IF EVER TO RESPOND. THE SITUATION HAS NOT CHANGED…

THE ROOTS OF INTOLERANCE AND HATRED ARE THE SAME, WITH THE GOVERNMENT AND MAJORITY CHURCH IGNORING, FACILITATING OR EVEN PROMOTING THE SITUATION.

REGRETTABLY THE VOICE OF THE EVANGELICALS IS DROWNED OUT BY RADICAL SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS, AND THOSE WHO MATTER MORE AS BLOCKS OF VOTES TO THE POLITICIANS.

SOME EVANGELICAL ALLIANCES AND LEADERSHIP HAVE TRIED TO GAIN THE GOVERNMENT’S FAVOR, INFLUENCE OR RESOURCES , BY KEEPING A LOW PROFILE, OR EVEN BY DENYING THAT INTOLERANCE EXISTS… SEVERAL GROUPS HAVE ACTUALLY PUBLISHED OR STATED FORMALLY THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAS RESOLVED ALL CASES, IN A TIMELY FASHION, AND THAT RELIGIOUS PERSECUCTION NO LONGER EXISTS… JUST FAMILY DISAGREEMENTS.

THIS IS BOTH A DISSERVICE TO THEIR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST WHO SUFFER IN THE NAME OF CHRIST, AND MUST BE AN OFFENSE IN THE SIGHT OF OUR LORD HIMSELF…

PLEASE KEEP MEXICO AND HER PERSECUTED BROTHERS IN YOUR PRAYERS AS THE COMING ELECTIONS AND JOCKEYING BETWEEN POLITICAL PARTIES, EVANGELICAL MINISTRIES AND HUMAN RIGHTS GROUPS PROMOTE THEIR PROPAGANDA AT COST TO THE EVANGELICALS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE.

Blast from the Past: 2010 Liberated at last! Bartolo Luna, Husband of Juana, & Estela’s Father

Bartolo's wife Juana, waiting almost 13 years for his release...

Acteal Families' Spokesperson, Estela Luna Perez, Bartolo's daughter, has carried this struggle on fo the release of her people for more than a dozen years.

We were advised tonight that Spokeswoman Estela Luna Perez’s father, Bartolo Luna was liberated from El Amate prison after serving 13 years of a 36 years sentence for the Acteal Massacre, on trumped up charges.

On December 22nd, 1997, a group of Pro Zapatista sympathizers Las Abejas was attacked and 45 Tzotziles, mostly women and children were brutally killed. Almost 120 Tzotziles were rounded up in the following days when the pro Zapatistas started pointing fingers and identifying a long list of neighbors or Indigenas from surrounding areas who were not part of the movement, political party, or majority religion.

86 were convicted over the years, half of them evangelical believers who insisted they were innocent scapegoats in a plan to rid the highlands of political and religious opposition. The Christians were considered to be “throwaways”, and less likely able to provide a defence for themselves.

The Mexican government on various levels was accused of facilitating the arrests and sentences to end the scandal quickly and hide any part or fault they may have had in planning the attack or in causing it by ignoring signs of unrest and violence growing in the area between groups.

The prisoners familes ended up being more and more isolated, and ended up the last several years with little pastoral care. They invested much of their time in calling attention to the lot of their men, and maintaining the properties their men had left behind.

In August of 2009, the Mexican Supreme Court ruled that the evidence used to convict the prisoners was manufactured, falsified, and that the process was full of human rights abuses.

The survivors, the Zapatistas, and the Catholic Liberation Theology proponents in Chiapas have insisted that all the prisoners without exception were guilty and that only the government authors of the crime were still free. That would mean that if only one of the prisoners is innocent that the case against all of them is suspect.

There are now only 35 prisoners left in jail… we have been praying for their release before 2010 ends. Please pray for true JUSTICE… and that the Holy Spirit bring hope, reconciliation, and peace to the Highlands of Chiapas…

The threat of violence and another massacre is still very real as long as anyone clings to the idea of vengeance or justice based on evidence that has been corrupted…
