November 2014: IDOP Around Mexico

This year we made a greater effort from our social network sites to promote IDOP: the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. We had saw a reach extended to various nations in Latina America from Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and around Mexico, including in the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, and Sonora to name a few. We are finding more and more Latinos are interested in Extreme Missions and the persecution in restricted or hostile areas. Many are paying close attention to reports about atrocities perpetrated against our Christian brethren, and the constant attacks against Christians in Nigeria, Pakistan, Siria and Irak in particular… and they want to know if what they are hearing is true or exaggerated… and how to respond. VOMC Special Prayer Alert: India… Madhya Pradesh province

The Voice of the Martyrs (Canada)

vomc indiaEight Christians in India have been imprisoned following a brutal attack in which a pastor and seven members of his congregation were stripped naked, whipped with belts, and punched before being arrested by local police.

On November 4th, Reverend Rana had just begun a meeting with members of Bethel Pentecostal Church in Madhya Pradesh province to prepare for a prayer service when a mob of local Hindu radicals, known as the Bajrang Dal, stormed abruptly into the meeting. Following the mob’s brutal attack, police arrived on the scene and surprisingly arrested the eight victimized Christians.

It is reported that the arrested believers have been imprisoned under India’s anti-conversion laws. These laws mandate that anyone wanting to convert from Hinduism (or trying to convert a Hindu) must seek permission from the government, providing a 30-day advance notice.

Please pray for these suffering brothers and sisters in Christ. Ask God to encourage and strengthen Reverend Rana and his faithful congregants, reminding them that it is a privilege to face such opposition since Jesus Himself was also persecuted (John 15:20).

VOM NZ Persecution Alert: Vietnam

17Vietnamese police employed thugs to ransack a church center and drag away nine Christians, who were then charged with not having proper ID papers – documents officials had confiscated from them in previous raids. The unregistered Mennonite Church led by Pastor Quang has been regularly attacked by police and gangs since June.

Pastor Quang and other church leaders issued an emergency, worldwide appeal following Wednesday night’s attack.

(Here are two excerpts from that appeal)

“They send gangs and thugs, strangers, masked people, and police of various units to harass and arrest us during the day and the night, when we worship, when we pray, when we have Bible study, when we have children’s classes, when we eat together, when we have school ceremonies” “We hope that members of our faith community everywhere will pray for our Mennonite church in Binh Duong at this time” they conclude. IRAQ: Pray for the Church Amid Great Uncertainty

Our sister mission in the United States recently received urgent prayer requests from a church in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, with whom they are partnering to bring needed assistance to believers affected by the widespread violence in the area.

The Islamic militant group called “Islamic State” (formerly known as ISIS) has been seizing territory throughout Iraq in its attempt to set up an Islamic caliphate. In the cities and towns they conquer, the remaining Christians are given a stark ultimatum: convert to Islam, pay a tax to remain in the area, abandon their homes permanently, or be killed. The vast majority of these Christ-followers have fled for Kurdish-controlled areas, but even there they are far from safe due to the overcrowded living conditions, lack of adequate resources, and risk of life-threatening illness.

Please pray that churches in the Kurdistan region will be equipped to meet the tremendous spiritual and physical needs of those fleeing to this area.

Pray, too, for a greater unity among the various congregations there. Additionally, ask that the Holy Spirit will move throughout this crisis — impacting the region, country and the entire Middle East to achieve God’s greater purposes.

Lift up in prayer the militants perpetrating these horrific crimes, asking that there be confusion and disagreement within their ranks so that all plans of evil and violence may cease.

Pray also that the militant group’s financial resources will be effectively cut off. Finally, ask God to grant wisdom to the government officials of the Kurdistan region as they work diligently to govern amid this crisis and defend the region.

This Sunday, November 9th, Christians across Canada and Mexico will be joining many thousands around the world for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. We encourage you to join us in interceding for believers in countries like Iraq, India, Nigeria, and any others that are on your heart. For free downloadable resources that you can use either individually, with your family, or with your church congregation, please visit www.idop.ca.

“…Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace
in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that,
but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,
and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured
into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

INDIA: Christians Attacked by Hindu Militants

Tensions remain high in a remote village of Chhattisgarh State after clashes between Hindu militants and followers of Christ. On October 25th, local officials summoned area Christians to a meeting in Madota Village under the pretext of resolving conflict over bans in the district on missionaries and non-Hindu religious activity. Dozens of villages in the district passed such bans earlier this year.

The Christians in the village gathered at the designated spot all day, but nobody else turned up. However, that evening, armed Hindu militants wearing saffron bands arrived and accused the Christians of converting Hindus. The militants then beat more than 15 of the unsuspecting believers. More than 10 of those maliciously attacked, the majority of whom were seriously injured, had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

Pray over the village during this time of tension and unrest, asking that the ‘Prince of Peace’ will use the Christians there to be His agents of ministry and reconciliation.

Also ask our gracious Father to bring a swift recovery to those who were injured in this latest assault.

May the Hindu militants soon respect the religious freedom of the believers in this village, so that these Christians will be free to practise their faith without fear of attack.

Until then, may God strengthen the resolve of His children to continue following Him in spite of the possible risks.

Religious Persecution is personal: Hebrews 13:3

Enough of Killing Christians, be it in Siria, Irak, Libya, Iran, wherever hatred of the Gospel appears. We are one Body in Christ… Religious Persecution is personal. (International Protest of the killing of Christians…)

bastaCrying out in San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas Mexico after the Los LLanos Group was detained illegally by the community authorities when they tried to return in July of 2013. They were paraded naked, tortured physically and threatened with being burned alive after being doused with kerosene. Later they were ramsomed by the state government, with no charges pressed by victims or government oficials involved in the negotiating.   Was it just a way to pass money between political alies? Are Christians in Indigenous communities pawns for the local officials and state functionaries who appear to make a commission on each case relocated to satisfy the majority church, organized crime organizations and the leftist insurgents?

los llanos (1)March of concerned Christians and organizations calling attention to the lack of government response in the state for years, impunity and the lack of a state of law.

Los LLanos (9)Pastor Lucio of the Los LLanos group, a healed and restored alcoholic escaped the angry mob and waited anxiously for the release of the rest of his group. He asks for NO More Expulsions of Evangelicals from their communities in Chiapas!

los llanos 2Please keep the varied groups in prayer. This Friday, the 31st of October… to celebrate the Day of the Reformation, persecuted groups and churches from around the state will be marching peacefully to protest not only the lack of attention to the cases, but the willful attempt of state government officials to block the resolution and attention to cases of religious persecution going back to 2008. Government officials have tried to influence or bully Evangelical leaders to not support the protest , march, and to actually deny that there are unattended cases in Chiapas, repeating the sins of the previous administration.                                                                                                                       The groups, including children, are protesting the lack of attention to cases in the following Municipalities, or where there are still roots of intolerance that give rise to cases every year, or where there are half solved cases, with Evangelicals still without water since 2008:

  • San Cristobal de las Casas / Los Altos de Chiapas: Los LLanos and Yashtinin
  • Las Margaritas: Cases La Buena Vista and La Piedad en particular
  • Huixtan: Chilil, San Gregorio and Zitim
  • Ocosingo: Nuevo Las Tacitas and Avellanal
  • Palenque
  • Chamula
  • Zinacantan
  • Venustiano Carranza: Matamoros
